Project Overview
This interactive e-learning module was developed to teach core leadership concepts—specifically the “Trust Account” model (inspired by Stephen R. Covey’s leadership principles)—to middle school students (6th grade and up). The project uses a gamified, scenario-based approach to demonstrate how daily choices and interpersonal interactions contribute to building or depleting trust in personal and professional relationships.
The Challenge
- Target Audience: Middle school students (Grades 6–8), adaptable for younger or older learners.
- Problem Statement: Abstract leadership concepts like “interpersonal trust,” “integrity,” and “emotional bank accounts” can feel theoretical and difficult for younger students to grasp.
- Goal: Create an engaging, self-paced interactive lesson that translates abstract character education into concrete, decision-driven scenarios where students see the immediate consequences of their actions.
Instructional Strategy & Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Identify key behaviors that make deposits into or withdrawals from a Trust Account.
- Evaluate real-world interpersonal scenarios and predict the impact of specific communication choices.
- Apply proactive strategies to repair trust after a withdrawal or conflict.
Pedagogical Alignment
- Bloom’s Taxonomy: Moves students from Understanding (identifying trust behaviors) to Application and Evaluation (navigating scenario choices and analyzing outcomes).
- Interactive Scenario-Based Learning: Choice-driven navigation provides immediate feedback, reinforcing the concept of cause and effect in human relationships.
Technical & Design Implementation
- Authoring Tool: Articulate Storyline
- Platform & Integration: Embedded directly into a custom WordPress portfolio site
- Visual & Structural Features:
- Interactive Scenarios: Learners navigate branching decisions that affect a dynamic visual “Trust Balance.”
- Formative Knowledge Checks: Knowledge-check slides validate understanding before advancing to higher-level concepts.
- Self-Paced Navigation: Simple, accessible controls designed for intuitive use by middle school students.
Results & Impact
- Increased Engagement: Translating textbook concepts into a digital, interactive format significantly improved student focus and participation compared to traditional lecture-style instruction.
- Practical Application: Served as an anchor lesson within a broader 7th-grade leadership unit, seamlessly connecting to real-world service projects (such as student-led Social Business proposals).
- Portability & Scalability: Built to be easily deployed across Learning Management Systems (LMS), embedded on web pages, or packaged for digital distribution.
